Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, highlighted significant advancements in the Ethereum ecosystem during his recent speech at Token 2049 in Singapore. Buterin emphasized the sharp decline in transaction fees on Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) networks, marking a critical milestone for mainstream crypto adoption.
Reflecting on the past, Buterin recounted paying over $800 for a single privacy-preserving transaction. Historically, Ethereum's gas fees skyrocketed to over $200 during peak congestion, posing a major hurdle for widespread adoption. However, with the advent of L2 solutions like Optimism and Arbitrum, transaction fees have plummeted to nearly zero.
Buterin remarked, “From being somewhere between $10 and $0.50 to being under $0.01, basically zero. At the same time, Optimism and Arbitrum, two major Ethereum layer twos, have hit this important security milestone… So rollups are rapidly becoming safer and rollups are finally affordable.”
L2 networks are vital for making the Ethereum mainnet cheaper and more scalable by offloading transactions to secondary chains. This reduction in fees enhances the usability of Ethereum for everyday transactions, significantly benefiting users and developers alike.

The Merge in September 2022, which transitioned Ethereum to proof-of-stake, halved block confirmation times, allowing transactions to be confirmed in 5 to 15 seconds. Buterin also reflected on iconic crypto-themed songs, celebrating the industry's cultural milestones.
Looking forward, he emphasized balancing mainstream adoption with decentralization, urging the development of practical solutions that maintain open-source values and the decentralized ethos of the crypto industry.
