OpenAI Voice Feature Update: Faster, More Human-Like Chat

Sept. 24, 2024 — OpenAI has started rolling out its long-awaited “Advanced Voice” feature to select ChatGPT users. In a post on X, OpenAI announced that the feature will become available to all Plus and Team users throughout the week.

The new “Advanced Voice” feature, originally planned for earlier this year, includes the ability to say phrases like “Sorry I’m late” in over 50 languages. The voice upgrade is part of OpenAI’s latest 4.0 model, designed to enhance user experience by offering more human-like, natural communication with the AI.

Faster, Smoother Conversations with ChatGPT 4.0

Advanced Voice Mode is a major upgrade that improves the fluidity and intuitiveness of conversations with ChatGPT.

Users can now experience faster responses, improved speech recognition, and the ability to interrupt or change topics mid-conversation—making the AI interaction feel more natural. This feature marks a significant step forward in how AI can adapt to real-time conversations, giving users more control over their interactions with ChatGPT.

Meet the New Voices: Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale

Along with this voice upgrade, OpenAI has introduced five new voices: Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale.

These voices complement existing options such as Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember, allowing users to customize their conversations with different vocal styles. The voices have been designed to sound more human-like, enhancing user engagement by creating a smoother, more relatable interaction.

Custom Instructions and Memory Features

In addition to voice improvements, OpenAI has also launched a memory feature that allows ChatGPT to remember key details from past conversations.

Users can set custom instructions, tailoring the chatbot to their preferences. This makes future interactions even more personalized and dynamic, as ChatGPT will retain and learn from previous interactions, ensuring smoother and more context-aware responses.

Some Limitations Remain

While the rollout of Advanced Voice is exciting, OpenAI admits it still has some limitations, especially when using the feature in noisy environments or through Bluetooth devices.

The company advises users that the feature may not work as well on in-car Bluetooth or speakerphone setups, but continuous improvements are expected.

Lingering Controversy over “Sky” Voice Model

However, some users remain disappointed that Altman’s controversial “Sky” voice model was removed after a legal dispute with actress Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson claimed that Altman’s “Sky” voice model was eerily similar to her own, leading to her opposition. Although Altman denied any intentional resemblance, he eventually scrapped the model, much to the dismay of users who had anticipated its release.
