Elon Musk versus OpenAI: How True Are Musk’s Claims?

Elon Musk Vs OpenAI: Latter Accused of Turning For-Profit

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, filed a lawsuit against the ChatGPT creator OpenAI on its partnership with Microsoft. The duo, Musk claims, is using anti-competitive practices to undermine rivals like Musk’s xAI. He has claimed OpenAI shifting to a for-profit model from its original nonprofit one. Moreover, Microsoft’s $13B investment in the firm is raising concerns over conflicts of interest and market manipulation.

OpenAI-Microsoft Trying to Rule the Generative AI Market?

To answer questions like does Elon Musk own OpenAI, who founded OpenAI, and did Elon Musk found OpenAI, Musk is also one of the co-founders of the firm OpenAI, but he left it in 2018. He then founded his own firm xAI, leading to AI chatbot Grok. The OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman as well as stakeholder Microsoft have been accused of predatory practices leading them to seize control over 70% of the generative AI market.

As per Musk and his team of lawyers, OpenAI is hurting xAI and members from the public who are now concerned about rushed, unsafe products. According to the laws of California, nonprofits can convert into for-profit stock corporations but not limited liability companies.

Claims by OpenAI Against Musk

On the other hand, OpenAI has defended by claiming that it remains nonprofit at its core. Its for-profit subsidiary is only to issue equity to raise capital and hire world-class talent. With questions like why did Elon Musk leave OpenAI coming up, the Chat GPT creator has accused Elon of repeatedly attempting to be recycling the same baseless complaints. It had further claimed that Musk’s been harassing OpenAI, trying to leverage the judicial system for an edge.

In fact, the firm has, in March, leaked emails from Musk in 2015 showing his support for collecting $1B funds to compete with Meta. Also, xAI is known to have recently secured funding.

In addition to this, Musk had threatened to ban Apple devices from its companies when Apple had touted integrating Chat GPT into its devices’ operating systems. A few months later, Apple came up with the new Apple Intelligence.

Conclusion

While Musk stands against OpenAI and others associated for turning away from the charitable mission, he also claims the OpenAI-Microsoft partnership is aiming to cutting off the access of competitors to investment capital and continuing benefitting from the shared competitive sensitive information of the former years.
