Crypto fundraising platform Legion has launched a pioneering reputation system specifically designed to enhance initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the European Union (EU).
his platform aims to assist retail investors in Europe by providing a safe and regulated environment for crypto investment while giving Web3 startups a streamlined way to attract genuine investors.
Legion’s system prioritizes merit-based investments by using attributes like on-chain activity, social influence, and developer contributions to gauge investor reliability. By integrating EigenTrust, a reputable open-source reputation algorithm initially developed at Stanford, Legion’s platform ensures that only credible and valuable participants contribute to early-stage ICO projects. This system reduces issues like bot activity, Sybil attacks, and unproductive investor engagement.
According to Matthew O’Connor, co-founder of Legion, this new platform is meant to help crypto projects avoid selling tokens to anonymous or unreliable investors. Legion’s approach brings a new layer of security by ensuring that reputation flows outward from known and respected figures within the industry, such as Vitalik Buterin. Those who have collaborated with reputable individuals inherit a portion of this trust, creating a ripple effect of credibility throughout the community.
Under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Legion ensures compliance with local legal frameworks, making it easier for retail investors in the EU to invest with confidence. MiCA's guidelines mandate transparency and disclosure for utility tokens without classifying them as financial assets, opening up the ICO market for EU-based investors while excluding non-accredited U.S. investors due to local restrictions.
Legion aims to bridge the gap between crypto startups and retail investors by fostering a sense of community and long-term involvement. Retail investors, who are often underrepresented in this space, offer startups benefits beyond capital, such as product feedback, organic marketing, and community support. “Real users bring value that top VCs can’t, building an engaged and supportive community,” O’Connor explained.
While currently focused on retail investors, Legion plans to welcome venture capital firms on its platform. However, VCs will compete with retail investors in the scoring system, creating a dynamic environment that O’Connor believes will foster healthy competition and ultimately benefit all parties involved.
