Dan Morehead, founder and managing partner of Pantera Capital, compared buying Bitcoin in 2013 to acquiring gold during the Iron Age. His visionary approach has yielded Pantera Capital a staggering 130,000% return since its initial Bitcoin purchase in July 2013, when Bitcoin was priced at just $74. Morehead’s analogy underscores his belief in Bitcoin’s transformative potential as a digital asset.
Launched in 2013, Pantera Bitcoin Fund capitalized on Bitcoin’s nascent stage, with just 1% of global financial wealth exposed to the cryptocurrency at the time. Morehead believed Bitcoin would either go to zero or achieve exponential growth. Today, Bitcoin has reached what he calls “escape velocity,” with over 300 million global users, marking a turning point in its adoption journey.
Morehead estimates that around 5% of financial wealth is now tied to Bitcoin, a number he expects to grow as regulatory clarity improves in the U.S. This shift, coupled with institutional participation driven by firms like BlackRock and Fidelity through spot Bitcoin ETFs, could position Bitcoin as a $15 trillion asset by 2028, with a projected price of $740,000 — a 667% increase from today.
Despite the fund’s remarkable success, Morehead recalls the turbulent times, including an 87% Bitcoin price crash in December 2013, just six months after their first purchase. During this period, Pantera Capital undertook 170 meetings worldwide, managing to secure only $1 million in investments. These struggles highlight the resilience required to navigate the volatile early years of cryptocurrency.
Morehead credits early adopters like Expedia for paving the way for corporate Bitcoin usage. As Bitcoin transitions into a mainstream asset, Morehead is optimistic about its future. He predicts “many more years of very compelling returns” as Bitcoin becomes increasingly institutionalized and integrated into global financial systems.
Pantera Capital’s journey reflects the transformative impact of early Bitcoin investments. With growing adoption and institutional interest, Morehead’s bold prediction of Bitcoin reaching $740,000 by 2028 underscores its long-term growth potential.
