Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sounded a cautionary note about the unchecked development of super-advanced artificial intelligence (AI), warning that it could surpass humans and become the next "apex species" on Earth. In a blog post dated November 27, Buterin, a well known figure in the cryptocurrency space, highlighted the unique nature of AI, emphasising its potential to create a new form of intelligence that might not align with human interests.
Buterin argued that unlike other global threats such as climate change or nuclear war, a malevolent superintelligent AI could pose an existential risk to humanity. He cited a survey of over 4,270 machine learning researchers in August 2022, who estimated a 5-10% chance of AI causing harm to humanity.
While acknowledging the risks, Buterin expressed optimism about humanity's ability to guide AI development with active intention, steering it toward beneficial outcomes. He underscored the importance of responsible oversight and decision-making to ensure that AI aligns with human values, ultimately emphasising that humans are the driving force behind the advancement of technology.
Vitalik Buterin advocates for mitigating the risks associated with super-advanced artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating brain-computer interfaces (BCI). A BCI establishes a direct communication link between the brain's electrical activity and external devices like computers or robotic limbs.
Buterin emphasises the potential of BCIs to significantly reduce the communication loop between humans and machines, offering a rapid response in milliseconds. This, he argues, is crucial for ensuring that humans maintain "meaningful agency" over AI, preventing the technology from acting in ways misaligned with human values. By actively involving humans in every decision made by AI through BCIs, Buterin believes there's a safer path forward.
Moreover, Buterin proposes infusing "active human intention" into AI development, guiding it toward outcomes that benefit humanity rather than solely pursuing profit. He underscores the importance of avoiding offloading high-level planning responsibilities to AI, thereby reducing the risk of the technology diverging from human values.
In his conclusion, Buterin expresses confidence in human creativity, declaring that humans are the "brightest star" in the universe. He envisions a future where human advancements, such as space travel and geoengineering, contribute to the enduring beauty of Earthly life for billions of years to come. This perspective reflects Buterin's optimism about humanity's capacity to navigate the complexities of AI and technology for the greater good.
