Former CEO Released from Federal Prison
Changpeng Zhao CZ, the founder of Binance, was released from a United States federal prison on September 27 after serving four months for violations of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. According to a spokesperson from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons, his sentence began after he pled guilty to federal charges related to inadequate AML controls at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
In November 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that CZ had pled guilty to failing to implement proper AML controls at Binance. This led to him stepping down as CEO, marking a significant shift in leadership for the exchange, which boasts a user base of over 230 million worldwide. At the time of his plea, CZ’s net worth was estimated at around $60 billion, making him the wealthiest individual to serve a prison sentence in the U.S.
CZ voluntarily returned to the U.S. from Dubai in April to serve his four-month sentence. His incarceration began in a minimum-security prison in Southern California and concluded in a halfway house in Long Beach, where he was allowed supervised outings during the day.
A spokesperson for Binance expressed relief at CZ’s return home, stating, “While he is not managing or operating Binance, we are excited to see what he does next.” They highlighted that Binance has continued to thrive under current leadership, surpassing 230 million global users since CZ's departure.
CZ’s four-month prison sentence was a significant reduction from the original 36 months sought by the DOJ, reflecting a lack of evidence regarding his knowledge of any illegal activities at Binance. In addition to his prison sentence, CZ was ordered to pay a $50 million fine, while Binance itself incurred $4.3 billion in penalties for breaches of U.S. AML laws. Despite the case, CZ's personal wealth remains intact, as he reportedly holds about 90% of Binance.
