Elastos wants to be a version of the internet that runs on blockchain. The project started all the way back in 2000, but the current version, which is based on blockchain technology and has been actively developed by Elastos since June 2017, is a newer one.

The people behind the project really believe that scaling is hard for both Ethereum and DApp platforms. Elastos says that while they are great for smart contracts, they are too slow, not flexible at all, and hard to use for full applications. Elastos is a platform for decentralised apps, or DApps, that promises to fix a lot of these problems.

Elastos was started by Rong Chen, who was working on operating systems at Microsoft Research in the year 2000. He went back to China to work on his own idea, which was to make an operating system for the whole web.

Later, when blockchain became a groundbreaking technology in 2017, Rong worked with Elastos co-founder Feng Han to add blockchain and finish his plan.
