Stacks is a layer-1 blockchain solution created to integrate smart contracts and decentralised apps (DApps) into Bitcoin (BTC). These smart contracts are added to Bitcoin without altering any of the aspects that make it so strong, such as its security and stability. These DApps are open and modular, which means that developers may build on top of one other's apps to provide features that would be impossible to create in a traditional app. Because Stacks employs Bitcoin as its foundation, everything that happens on the network is resolved on the most extensively used and likely the most secure blockchain in operation – Bitcoin. The platform is driven by the Stacks token (STX), which is utilised to enable smart contract execution, transaction processing, and the registration of new digital assets on the Stacks 2.0 blockchain. Stacks was founded with the help of many renowned venture capital firms, including Y Combinator, Digital Currency Group, and Winklevoss Capital. It was developed by the New York-based Blockstack PBC. The platform was formerly known as Blockstack, but then in Q4 2020, it was renamed Stacks to "remove the ecosystem and open source project from Blockstack PBC" – the company that invented the original protocols.
