Kava is a Layer-1 blockchain that integrates Cosmos' speed and compatibility with Ethereum's developer capabilities.

The Kava Network has a co-chain design intended for developers. The Ethereum Co-Chain allows for the use of EVM smart contracts, whilst the Cosmos Co-Chain allows for the use of the lightning-fast Tendermint consensus engine and the Inter Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC).

The two co-chains are linked via a translator module, allowing for smooth interoperability and combining the two most popular blockchain development platforms into a single, scalable network.

Brian Kerr, Ruaridh O'Donnell, and Scott Stuart are the co-founders of Kava Labs. Scott Stuart, a former professional poker player and serial entrepreneur, currently serves as the CEO of Kava Labs. Scott worked as Kava Labs' Head of Product from 2017 until 2021, when he succeeded Brian Kerr as CEO.

The Kava Network has its own governance and utility currency, KAVA, which validators can stake or delegate to validator nodes. Stakers and delegators receive 37.5% of all KAVA emissions as an incentive for safeguarding the network. Kava stakeholders can also vote on network governance initiatives.
