Nano is a small, lightweight cryptocurrency that was made to make secure, almost instant, and fee-free payments. It also fixes some of the biggest problems with both traditional financial infrastructure and many modern cryptocurrencies.

The project started in 2014 under the name RaiBlocks. The coin, which was called XRB at the time, came out the following year through a public faucet. Users could get small amounts of XRB by solving a captcha. Anyone with a computer or smartphone could solve captchas and get RaiBlocks as a reward. Over time, the number of XRB people got for each solved captcha changed.

In January 2018, RaiBlocks (XRB) changed its name to Nano. This was done to better reflect the speed and ease of use of the project.

It is a peer-to-peer platform that uses a unique block-lattice data structure to make it easy for users to send each other money without going through a central authority.

Nano is different from other platforms because it doesn't use a large mining network's proof-of-work to reach consensus. Instead, it uses a system called Open Representative Voting (ORV), in which account holders vote for a representative who then works to confirm blocks of transactions securely.

ORV makes Nano very energy efficient, which makes it a more environmentally friendly alternative to cryptocurrencies that are based on proof-of-work (POW).
