Vitalik Buterin was long thought to be the Shiba Inu's creator, however, he rejected this on the Lex Fridman podcast on June 5, 2021.

Shiba Inu and the SHIB token are among a swarm of digital currencies with dogs as themes, including Baby Dogecoin (BabyDoge), Dogecoin (DOGE), JINDO INU (JIND), Alaska Inu (LAS), and Alaskan Malamute Token (LASM). These lower-valued currencies have attracted investors who missed the Dogecoin surge from 0.0002 to roughly 0.75 USD.

Shiba Inu was listed on one of the prominent exchanges as one of the largest US-based crypto markets, on September 17, 2021. This announcement drove the Shiba Inu price to surge by more than 40% in the next two days, bringing the meme doge token back into the limelight.
