Ethereum News today centers on a live privacy tool, a protocol debate, and an active market. The Ethereum Foundation launched zkAPI on mainnet, the authors of EIP-8363 pulled their proposal from the Hegotá upgrade, and ETH traded higher on heavy volume. Here is what each update means for users, stakers, and traders.
Ethereum News Today: At a Glance
Four stories shaped October 2, 2026. The table gives a quick summary before the details. Each item stands on its own, and none is claimed to have caused another.
| News development | Key update | Why it matters |
| zkAPI launch | Private API payments go live on Ethereum mainnet | AI privacy and ETH/USDC payment use cases |
| EIP-8363 proposal | Reward-burn plan withdrawn from Hegotá consideration | Staking rewards and ETH issuance policy |
| VanEck wallet activity | Reported sales of BTC and ETH through Gemini | Institutional wallet activity |
| ETH market update | ETH at $2,717.57, up 1.2% in 24 hours | Price, volume, and market capitalization |
The Ethereum Foundation launched zkAPI on Ethereum mainnet on October 1, 2026, working with the Open Anonymity Project. The system lets people pay for AI models and other metered APIs without exposing who they are.
Users first deposit ETH or USDC into a smart contract vault. To use a service, their device creates a zero-knowledge proof showing the request is backed by funds, without revealing which deposit pays for it. A zkAPI server checks the proof and issues a temporary API key with a spending cap. Usage is settled afterward from the private balance.
The design builds on the ZK API Usage Credits idea that Vitalik Buterin and Davide Crapis published on February 11, 2026. AI chat and agents come first. Blockchain RPC queries, image generation, VPN access, and machine-to-machine payments are listed as other uses.
There are limits. zkAPI does not hide IP addresses, request timing, or prompt content, so sessions can still be linked. The project's GitHub page calls the protocol experimental.

Co-proposer Jérôme de Tychey announced on October 1 that the team withdrew EIP-8363 from the Hegota upgrade plan. The plan would have burned a growing share of validator rewards as more ETH is staked. Its goal was to limit the risk that very high staking rates pose to Ethereum's neutrality.
Aave founder Stani Kulechov, ether.fi CEO Mike Silagadze and Lido contributors opposed it. They argued that lower rewards could push out solo stakers while large operators stay. The Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster had said on September 7 that a fork scoping process is not the right place to settle issuance policy.
The withdrawal does not end the debate. Current issuance rules stay unchanged. The authors plan a separate process, starting with an issuance forum at Devcon in November.

On-chain tracker Onchain Lens reported that wallets tied to VanEck's ETF products sold about $10.76 million in assets through Gemini. The reported amounts include 45.41 BTC, worth around $3.84 million, and 2,570 ETH, worth around $6.91 million. The headline also named SOL, but no SOL amount was given.
Traders often watch institutional wallets for clues. Still, a reported sale does not prove a change in strategy, and wallet activity alone does not explain intent or price impact. Treat it as one data point, not a bearish signal.

ETH price trades at $2,717.57, up 1.2% over 24 hours, based on the supplied market report. Trading volume reached about $14.1 billion, and market capitalization stands near $331 billion.
Short-term price moves and long-term network work are different things. Volume and market cap show how active the market is, but one day does not forecast what comes next. No evidence shows that zkAPI or the VanEck sales drove today's move. Prices change fast, so check live data before acting.

This round of Ethereum News touches three groups in different ways.
Users and AI developers: zkAPI adds another private payment option for paid APIs.
Stakers: EIP-8363's withdrawal keeps the reward-burn change out of Hegotá for now.
Traders: Price and volume give a market snapshot, and the VanEck report is one extra data point.
| Date | Development |
| February 11, 2026 | Vitalik Buterin and Davide Crapis publish the ZK API Usage Credits design |
| September 7, 2026 | Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster declines to back EIP-8363 for Hegotá |
| October 1, 2026 | zkAPI launches on mainnet, and EIP-8363 is withdrawn from Hegotá |
| November 2026 | Issuance-policy talks planned around Devcon |
The latest Ethereum News spans private AI payments, an ongoing fight over staking economics, reported institutional sales, and current market data. Readers should watch how zkAPI performs in real use and how the issuance talks at Devcon unfold. Neither outcome is certain.
