Microsoft will be spending $80 billion in the first quarter of 2025, in order to develop data centers. These centers will be used to train AI models and deploy cloud-based artificial intelligence applications.
This move is a result of the surge in demand for AI-powered technologies, especially post the 2022 launch of Open AI’s Chat GPT. AI requires a lot of computing power which, in turn, needs more specialized data centers to connect thousands of chips.
Already spent billions in AI infrastructure as well as expansion of data centers’ network, MS is now a key player in the AI space. Microsoft underwent 5.3% rise in its capital expenditure in Q1 2025 to reach $20 billion. Microsoft, referred to as the primary backer of AI, is among the top Big Tech firms racing for AI supremacy.
The $80 billion investment will mostly go to the US, as per Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President. He said that private capital investments and innovations by American companies have proved beneficial for the US in leading the race.
Fiscal year ending June 2024 saw Microsoft allocate more than $50B to capital expenditures, part of which was spent on building server farms for AI services.
Smith has urged the new US administration to avoid heavy-handed regulations on AI. He said that the advancement of the US private sector with wind at its back should be prioritized as the most important public-policy.
The investment reflects the growing importance of AI in shaping future technology and bringing economic growth.
