The EigenLayer Foundation has officially announced that its Season 2 EIGEN coin airdrop will go live by September 17. This second phase is aimed at rewarding key contributors within the EigenLayer ecosystem, including stakers, operators, and ecosystem partners.
EigenLayer is a protocol built on Ethereum that allows users to restake their liquid staking tokens (LSTs) like stETH (Lido), rETH (Rocket Pool), and cbETH (Coinbase). By restaking, users help improve the security and decentralization of decentralized applications (dApps) and rollups in the network. This model enables participants to contribute to pooled security without creating new validator networks. Operators, who validate dApps and rollups, earn higher rewards but also face slashing risks if they don’t uphold their commitments.
The Season 2 airdrop will consider specific metrics to distribute rewards fairly. For stakers and operators, rewards will be calculated based on factors like ETH-hours, the amount of EIGEN staked, and weighted delegated-ETH-hours. These metrics ensure that participants who have been more actively involved in the network receive more significant rewards.In addition to stakers and operators, the EigenLayer Foundation is also rewarding ecosystem partners, including AVSs, LRTs, Rollups, and RaaS providers. This broad inclusion recognizes the contributions of multiple stakeholders in the EigenLayer ecosystem.
The airdrop will also reward community members who have contributed to EigenLayer in various ways. Open-source contributors, Twitter and Discord participants, podcast creators, and analysts will all receive allocations based on their involvement. This approach ensures that those who have supported EigenLayer’s growth from its early stages are recognized.
First airdrop of EigenLayer phase began in May, distributing 5% of the token supply. To prevent rapid sell-offs, these tokens were initially non-transferable. Season 2 is designed to distribute rewards to users who engage with more complex liquid restaking tokens (LRTs). The foundation is also planning a programmatic incentives program to continue rewarding participants beyond Season 2.
