On September 19, blockchain security firm PeckShield sounded the alarm, revealing that the official X account of Decentraland, a popular virtual reality platform, had been hacked. The attackers are using the compromised account to circulate a phishing link, falsely promoting a MANA token airdrop. This fraudulent link is designed to trick users into connecting their wallets, leading to their funds being stolen shortly after.
The hackers behind the attack have shared the phishing link through a post on Decentraland’s X account, urging users to claim a fake airdrop of MANA tokens. Unsuspecting users are directed to a malicious website that prompts them to connect their crypto wallets. Once the wallets are connected, the attackers gain access to the funds and steal them. This phishing technique is becoming more common in the crypto space, where scammers use official-looking announcements to deceive followers.
PeckShield has urged Decentraland users to avoid engaging with any posts on the platform’s X account until further notice. They have specifically warned against clicking on the phishing link or interacting with any content related to the fake MANA airdrop. Users are advised to wait for an official statement from Decentraland to confirm the account's security has been restored. Social media account hacks like this one have become a growing issue, as seen just a day earlier when several high-profile accounts were targeted by crypto scammers.
Scambaiter Kitboga, known for his efforts in wasting scammers' time, recently shared some valuable advice on avoiding phishing scams. He noted that scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act quickly. In such situations, it’s important to stay calm and think carefully before taking any action. For Decentraland followers, this means carefully considering any suspicious announcements and waiting for official confirmations before interacting with any potential airdrop claims or links.
