Ethereum layer-2 network Base has achieved a new record, reaching 106.26 transactions per second (TPS), making it the fastest Ethereum layer-2 solution to date. This milestone represents a 28% increase in TPS since November 23, demonstrating rapid growth and efficiency in transaction handling. In January 2024, Base was averaging only 4 TPS, marking a dramatic improvement within the year. This increase solidifies Base’s position as a leader among Ethereum layer-2 networks, outpacing competitors like Taiko.
Base’s Total Value Locked (TVL) has surged past $10 billion, currently sitting at $10.68 billion according to L2BEAT data. This achievement makes Base the second-largest Ethereum layer 2 by TVL, trailing only Arbitrum One, which holds $18.3 billion. Base overtook OP Mainnet in June and continues to make significant ground in the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem. Collectively, Ethereum’s layer-2 solutions now account for a total TVL of $49.3 billion, highlighting their growing importance in the blockchain landscape.
Base’s transaction volume recently surpassed 1 billion, largely fueled by memecoin trading during the ongoing bull cycle. However, this popularity has also attracted security risks, with an 18-fold increase in funds lost to phishing scams reported from January to March. As Base gains traction, these security concerns underscore the need for robust measures to protect users in an expanding network.
In October, Base introduced fault proofs as part of its strategy to gradually decentralize the Ethereum layer 2. Fault proofs play a critical role in moving from a centralized “Stage 0” rollup to a more autonomous “Stage 1” rollup with limited oversight. This development aligns with Base’s long-term vision of decentralization and resilience in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Base’s record-setting performance in TPS and its $10 billion TVL mark signal its growing influence in the blockchain space. With ambitious plans and ongoing decentralization efforts, Base is positioned as a formidable competitor in the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem, paving the way for further innovation and adoption.
