Kusama is an experimental blockchain platform aimed to give developers a widely interoperable and scalable architecture. It is based on Substrate, a blockchain development kit created by Parity Technologies. Kusama shares nearly the same codebase as Polkadot, one of the most popular interoperable blockchains. By deploying on Kusama, fast-paced applications have access to a highly scalable, interoperable sharded network with capabilities not yet available on Polkadot. To that purpose, Kusama refers to itself as a "canary network." Kusama has a low barrier to entry for establishing parachains, as well as minimal bond requirements for validators. It is most frequently used by early-stage businesses and for experimentation. Kusama was developed by the same firm that created Polkadot, Parity Technologies. Dr. Gavin Wood, an internationally known computer scientist and programmer who also co-founded Ethereum, is its founder. Parity Technologies has a large staff that includes some of the world's most accomplished blockchain developers, and the company has over 100 employees worldwide. Furthermore, Kusama receives funding from the Web3 Foundation, which was founded to "nurture and steward technology and applications in the domains of decentralised web software protocols."
