Bybit Scandal: Ex-WeChain Manager Jailed for Massive Fraud

Bybit Fraud: Ex-WeChain Manager Jailed for $5.7M Crypto Theft

A former payroll manager at WeChain, Ho Kai Xin, has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for stealing $5.7 million from crypto exchange Bybit. A Singapore court found her guilty of 44 charges, including fraud and money laundering. Ho manipulated payroll records to transfer millions into her own crypto wallets, later converting them into fiat currency to fund a luxurious lifestyle.

How Ho Kai Xin Carried Out the Fraud

Ho Kai Xinwas responsible for processing salaries for 900 Bybit employees while working at WeChain, the company handling Bybit’s payroll. She altered Microsoft Excel files to falsely show inflated salary payments owed by Bybit. These manipulated records allowed her to send $4.2 million to four crypto wallets under her control. Ho then converted the stolen crypto into fiat currency and spent it on luxury items, including a Mercedes-Benz, Louis Vuitton bags, and a penthouse deposit worth $750,000.

Fraud Timeline: How It Went Undetected

The fraudulent activities took place between May 2022 and October 2022, during Ho’s tenure at WeChain. She began siphoning funds in May 2022, and as her actions remained undetected, she continued to exploit the system for months. In February 2023, WeChain finally uncovered the discrepancies and reported them to the police. Authorities arrested Ho in April 2023 after an internal investigation confirmed her misconduct.

Bybit Recovers Some Funds, but Millions Remain Missing

Despite Ho’s attempts to launder the money, Bybit managed to recover over $1.1 million in Tether (USDT) from her electronic wallets. Additionally, police seized $140,000 from her bank account and confiscated assets worth $330,000, including a Mercedes-Benz. However, more than $4.3 million remains unaccounted for, and Ho has not made any offers to repay the stolen funds.

Ho’s Failed Attempt to Cover Her Tracks

When confronted by investigators, Ho attempted to shift the blame by falsely claiming that a fictional cousin named "Jason Teo" was responsible for the unlawful transactions. However, authorities quickly discovered that "Teo" did not exist, further solidifying Ho’s involvement in the crime. Her attempts to mislead law enforcement only worsened her case, leading to a heavier sentence.

Singapore Court Hands Down Nearly 10-Year Sentence

After pleading guilty to 44 charges, including fraud, cheating, and money laundering, Ho Kai Xin was sentenced to nine years and 11 months in prison. Her sentence will begin after she completes a separate six-week sentence for contempt of court, which was imposed when she defied orders and continued spending stolen funds. Prosecutors highlighted that Ho showed no remorse and had gone on a "cheating spree" that severely impacted Bybit. Amidst this, Bybit CEO Ben Zhou has openly dismissed Pi Network as a scam, citing serious concerns over its legitimacy and a 2021 warning from Chinese authorities about potential fraud.
